Executive Vice President & Country Manager, Wild Planet Foods

For our premier feature, we’ll take a deep dive into Tim's thoughts and experiences with Wild Planet through a series of questions and answers:

Q: What is your favorite Wild Planet product and why?

A: I love all our products! But if I had to pick two, it would be our skinless and boneless sockeye salmon, for its incredible flavor and quality, and our traditional sardines in extra virgin olive oil for their versatility and convenience. The product I am eating the most lately for a quick protein fix while in between meetings are the Ready-to-Eat Tuna, Bean & Corn Salad and the Tuna Pasta Salad.

Q: Do you have a favorite recipe using Wild Planet products?

A: I'm a purist when it comes to our sardines and salmon. I enjoy them straight out of the can, letting the delicious taste and textures shine through. Maybe a little chopped pickle for a touch of crunch and dill when I have tuna, but that's it. They're simply amazing on their own.

Q: Why do you enjoy working at Wild Planet?

A: It all boils down to three things: our mission, our people, and our connection with the retail world and customers. I believe in our commitment to sustainability and making a positive impact. Our goal is to provide consumers with options in canned seafood that can allow them to become their own advocates for making better choices for the environment and their own health. I'm surrounded by talented and passionate colleagues who share my values. And I love interacting with our customers, understanding their needs, and sharing the Wild Planet story.

Q: Can you share any pivotal turning points in Wild Planet's history?

A: Landing our albacore tuna in several large scale Natural Grocery, Conventional Grocery, and Club retailers was a game-changer. It gave us access to a wider audience of consumers and demonstrated that sustainable seafood could be enjoyed by everyone, not just those in the smaller specialty segment. My role was to facilitate these partnerships, ensuring product availability and configuration to their needs. But the real triumph was our success in the early years within the natural food market of retailers which laid the foundation for reaching a broader audience and proving that delicious and sustainable seafood could provide solutions for the consumers and retailers alike.

Q: What excites you most about Wild Planet's future?

A: Our Ready-to-Eat Tuna Salads. They offer convenience, quality, and our mission all in one package. They bring organic Earth ingredients together with responsibly pole and line sourced skipjack tuna that makes for a perfect combination of making peoples’ lives easier, and allowing them to be healthier, and feel good about purchases that they make – all which make their day even better.

Q: What does sustainability mean to you and why is it important?

A: For me, it's about doing everything we do in creating a consumer product with the least negative impact on the planet. It's about cutting no corners and always doing the right thing, no matter the cost. It's about ensuring a healthy planet for future generations. And while I have a lot to learn and improve on in my personal sustainability journey, I'm constantly trying to do my part. It’s too easy to do the wrong thing. And until we change that mentality, it’s not going to change our world for the better.

Q: What do you wish consumers knew about fishing, ocean health or environmental sustainability?

A: I’d like them to know the difference between how we source our products versus the large majority of other products that are sourced in the canned seafood segment. I would want them to know the great efforts we go through to strictly source pole and line, pole and troll, and handline caught tuna. The reason why we are doing this is to virtually eliminate all bycatch and mortality of the other species that come from the larger scale fishing operations. We really want to make sure that our future generations can enjoy the gifts that our oceans provide each and every day.
