Elizabeth Mulligan, Production Coordinator & Customer Service Supervisor, Wild Planet Foods
When I joined Wild Planet four years ago, I never imagined how profoundly this experience would shape my personal and professional life. Coming from a major grocery chain where I honed my customer service skills, I was excited to apply my knowledge to a company whose values aligned so closely with my own. Little did I know that this would be just the beginning of an incredible journey that would take me from the frontlines of customer interaction to the heart of our production process.

From day one, I was struck by the passion and dedication of everyone at Wild Planet. It wasn't just a job; it was a mission. As I progressed through the company, moving from customer service to marketing and eventually to production, I gained a holistic view of how our mission translates into action at every level. This journey has been eye-opening, allowing me to see firsthand how each decision we make impacts not only our business but also the health of our oceans and the communities that depend on them.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my current role is the opportunity to be involved in decision-making processes that directly affect our sustainability efforts. Whether it's fine-tuning our production methods to reduce waste or collaborating on new product innovations that push the boundaries of sustainable seafood, I feel a sense of pride knowing that my work contributes to positive change.

Living in Humboldt County, where our headquarters are located, has deepened my connection to our mission. I've had the privilege of exploring some of the most beautiful coastlines and forests in the world. These experiences serve as a constant reminder of why our work is so crucial. Every time I walk along a beach or hike a new trail, I'm reinvigorated in my commitment to protecting these precious ecosystems.

As we celebrate Wild Planet’s 20th anniversary this year, I find myself reflecting on how far we've come and the exciting journey ahead. When I add our skipjack tuna to my lunch or enjoy one of our Ready-to-Eat Tuna Salads on a busy day, I'm reminded that these simple acts are part of a larger movement. We're not just providing nutritious meals; we're demonstrating that it's possible to enjoy seafood while respecting and preserving our oceans.

The challenges facing our oceans are significant, but so is our determination to make a difference. At Wild Planet, we're not just talking about sustainability; we're living it every day. And as we continue to grow and innovate, I'm honored to be part of a team that's truly reinvigorating our oceans for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Mulligan

Elizabeth's passion for Wild Planet's mission shines through in every aspect of her work. In this Q&A, she shares insights into her favorite products, her experiences at the company, and her thoughts on sustainability and ocean conservation. Her responses reflect not only her deep knowledge of Wild Planet's operations but also her personal commitment to making a positive impact on the world.

Q: What is your favorite Wild Planet product and why?

A: I'm truly torn between two favorites. Our Ready-to-Eat Wild Tuna and Quinoa Salad is a perfect on-the-go light meal that I find myself reaching for time and time again. The balance of flavors and textures is just right, and it's so satisfying. But I also have a special place in my heart for our 2.82oz Skipjack Solid Light Wild Tuna in Pure Olive Oil. It's the ideal size for adding to salads, and I love that the olive oil means I don't need to add much additional dressing. I eat it probably three or four times a week on my salads.

Q: Do you have a favorite recipe using Wild Planet products?

A: I love our Chicken and Black Bean Stuffed Sweet Potatoes. I feel like this recipe doesn't get the love it deserves! It is all around the perfect meal. The combination of our organic roasted chicken with sweet potatoes and black beans creates a dish that's both nutritious and satisfying. I've actually been thinking about trying this recipe with our tuna as a seafood alternative. I think the rich flavor of our skipjack tuna would complement the sweetness of the potatoes beautifully, and it would be a great way to incorporate more omega-3s into the dish.

Q: Why do you enjoy working at Wild Planet?

A: Beyond the feeling that I really am involved in a company that is truly trying to make a difference and preserve our oceans and the various marine life that calls it home, I am so lucky to have found a place that is full of incredible people. I go to work knowing that the people I see truly care about the success of everyone around them, both personally and professionally, and it really is such a great feeling.

Q: Can you share any pivotal turning points in Wild Planet's history?

A: The growth of our leadership team. They've brought in resources that have allowed us to expand our manufacturing capabilities and improve our sustainability tracking. This has positioned Wild Planet as a bigger force for positive change in the industry. We're not just following best practices; we're setting new standards. Their focus on sustainability has really solidified our position as a key player in the canned seafood industry.

Q: What excites you most about Wild Planet's future?

A: I'm always excited to see new product innovation! We have some really interesting projects in the pipeline that I believe will push the boundaries of what people expect from sustainable seafood products. It's not just about selling seafood; it's about changing the way people think about their food choices and their relationship with the environment.

Q: What does sustainability mean to you and why is it important?

A: Sustainability to me means caring. Caring about the planet; caring about the other beings that call this planet home; caring for ourselves, those around us, and future generations. We were given an incredible planet filled with so many resources, and we have to work to maintain those resources for those to come.

People seem to forget that even the smallest of things matter! Whether it's drinking your morning coffee out of a reusable cup, voting with your dollars at the grocery store to support sustainable companies, or picking up ten pieces of trash every time you visit the beach, a park, etc., everything can make a difference. And setting an example for those around you to care for and take pride in this beautiful place is one of the most important parts of sustainable living.

Q: What do you wish consumers knew about fishing, ocean health or environmental sustainability?

A: I wish more consumers understood that a healthy ocean is a properly fished ocean. There's often a misconception that all fishing is harmful to marine ecosystems, but that's not the case when it's done sustainably. Over the years, there have been numerous efforts to paint the fishing industry in a negative light, highlighting practices like massive trawlers that rake along the ocean floor, destroying ecosystems, or huge purse seine ships that indiscriminately scoop up everything in their path. While these harmful practices do exist and should be condemned, they're not representative of the entire industry.

What I want consumers to know is that sustainable fishing methods, like the pole and line or pole and troll techniques we use at Wild Planet, can actually benefit ocean health. These methods allow us to selectively harvest only the species and sizes of fish we're targeting, minimizing bycatch and protecting the broader marine ecosystem.

Sustainable fishing also helps maintain the delicate balance of marine populations. By taking only what we need, when we need it, and in a way that doesn't negatively affect other ocean life, we can actually contribute to the health and diversity of marine ecosystems.

Q: Any special Wild Planet memories you'd like to share?

A: One of my most cherished Wild Planet memories just happened this August. Our entire company gathered in Humboldt County, California, where Wild Planet began twenty years ago. As someone who was involved in planning this event, I was thrilled to see how it unfolded. We put together a program that not only celebrated our achievements but also reinforced our commitment to ocean conservation and sustainable practices. We engaged in activities like beach cleanups and hikes, which allowed our team to experience firsthand the natural beauty we're working to protect. It was amazing to see everyone walk away with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger connection to Wild Planet's vision. The gathering provided a wonderful opportunity for our team to bond, share experiences, and gain a deeper appreciation for each other's roles in our mission. Seeing colleagues from across the country experience the magic of Humboldt County and understand where our journey began was truly special. This event has undoubtedly created memories that will inspire and motivate us for years to come.
