I recently had the opportunity to try out Wild Planet Wild Yellowtail and decided that the mild flavor of these fillets would pair beautifully with a Poke-inspired sauce, some leftover rice, and half an avocado I had on hand. Thus, these Wild Planet Wild Yellowtail Poke-Inspired Bowls were born!

Why I used Wild Planet Wild Yellowtail

Simply packed in organic extra virgin olive oil, water, and sea salt, these cans of Wild Planet skinless & boneless yellowtail fillets let the natural flavor of this rich yet mild North Pacific fish shine through. These are wild caught with single-species targeted purse seine fishing, without the use of FADs (fish aggregating devices). You can see that you get little fillets rather than just flakes of yellowtail in the Wild Planet cans — these small, abundant fish swim in single-species schools and are low on the food chain, so you run a low risk of non-targeted species being caught. They’re also packed with protein and naturally occurring Omega 3:

Poke-Inspired Wild Yellowtail Bowl Recipe

No, these aren’t authentic Poke bowls — but these Poke-inspired bowls are a great alternative to sourcing raw sushi grade fish; you can enjoy them anytime from pantry ingredients when you stock up on Wild Planet Wild Yellowtail (or any of their products). And talk about easy to make, right? You need just 15 minutes to whisk up the sauce, chop up your toppings, and throw together a flavorful, protein-packed lunch bowl. Without further ado, here's the recipe that only takes 15 minutes to make!

Yellowtail Recipes




    For the sauce

  • 2 Ttbsp soy sauce

  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil

  • 1/2 Tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper

  • 1/4 tsp minced garlic

  • >1/4 tsp ginger

  • For the bowls:

  • Cooked rice

  • 1 can Wild Planet Wild Yellowtail, flaked with a fork

  • 1/2 of an avocado, diced

  • 1 green onion, chopped

  • Sesame seeds, to taste



  1. Combine all of the sauce ingredients.

  2. Scoop yourself out a bowl of cooked rice and top it with flaked Wild Planet Wild Yellowtail, diced avocado, chopped green onion, sesame seeds, and sauce to taste.

  3. Note: You could also briefly toast the sesame seeds to punch up their flavor, but I was going for quick &easy today! Add additional veggies to your bowl as desired.
