FAQs
What do Wild Planet sardines taste like?
Our wild sardines have a rich, savory flavor with a light smoky finish that's surprisingly delicious, even for newcomers to tinned fish. The firm, meaty texture sets them apart from softer canned sardines you might find elsewhere.
They're packed in organic extra virgin olive oil with just a touch of sea salt, which gives them a clean, Mediterranean taste without any fishy aftertaste. If you're new to sardines, try them on crackers with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to brighten the flavor.
Are sardines healthier than tuna?
Sardines are nutritional powerhouses that offer some advantages over tuna. Because sardines are small fish lower on the food chain, they accumulate far less mercury. The FDA reports a mean mercury concentration of just 0.013 parts per million for sardines. Tuna mercury levels vary significantly based on catch method and fish size: the average mercury content of tuna rises with the age and size of the fish, with older, larger tuna (6-12 years old) living at lower depths accumulating more mercury than younger, smaller tuna (3-5 years old) caught near the surface.
Pole-and-line and troll-caught tuna target these younger fish, which is why sustainably caught albacore can test as low as 0.17 ppm, roughly half the FDA average for conventionally caught albacore. One can of our sardines delivers 18g of protein, 1800mg of EPA and DHA Omega-3s, and 50% of your daily Vitamin D.
Is it better to buy sardines in water or olive oil?
It depends on how you plan to eat them. Sardines packed in extra virgin olive oil have a richer, more flavorful taste and silkier texture, making them perfect for eating straight from the tin, on salads, or with crackers. The olive oil also helps your body absorb fat-soluble nutrients like Vitamin D. Sardines in water have a cleaner, lighter taste that works well for pasta dishes where you're adding your own sauce or cooking with garlic and spices.
We offer both options: our Wild Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil for that rich Mediterranean experience, and our Wild Sardines in Water, No Salt Added for those watching sodium or preferring a neutral base.
What's the difference between Wild Planet sardines and your other sardine varieties?
We offer several sardine options to match different tastes and nutrition goals. Our Extra Virgin Olive Oil variety (this product) has a rich, savory flavor with light smoke, making it best for straight-from-the-tin snacking, salads, and Mediterranean-style dishes.
Our Water, No Salt Added option offers a clean, mild taste with the lowest sodium, great for cooking or if you prefer to season yourself. Our Lemon variety has a bright, citrus-forward flavor perfect for fresh salads. All varieties use the same sustainably caught sardines from the North Pacific and deliver the same protein and Omega-3 benefits.
Where are Wild Planet sardines caught and how?
Our sardines are harvested from the pristine waters of the North Pacific Ocean. We work with well-managed fisheries in Japan that target free-swimming schools of sardines (Sardinops sagax and Sardinops melanostictus). The fish are caught using single-species purse-seine and drift-net methods. We never use FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices), which helps protect ocean sustainability by preventing unintentional bycatch of other species. Every can is traceable from ocean to shelf through our partnership with Trace Register.
Why do I sometimes get different numbers of sardines?
Our sardines are packed by weight, not by count. Each fish must weigh between 40 and 70 grams, so you might find as many as 5 smaller sardines or as few as 2 larger ones in your tin. As for appearance, this comes down to natural fat content, which varies by season and ocean conditions.
Sardines from cold waters will be fattier, and when cooked, that fat can liquefy and dislodge the skin. Don't let the appearance fool you: these fattier sardines are actually bursting with Omega-3 fatty acids. Leaner sardines stay more intact but are slightly higher in protein. Both are delicious and nutritious.
Is it okay to eat sardines every day?
For most people, eating sardines daily is perfectly fine and can be a fantastic addition to their diet. They're one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat: high in protein, rich in Omega-3s, and loaded with essential minerals like calcium and iron. Because sardines are small fish low on the food chain, mercury isn't a concern the way it can be with larger fish.
The FDA classifies sardines as a "Best Choice" fish, safe to eat two to three servings per week. That said, if you're watching sodium intake, rotate between our olive oil and no-salt-added varieties. As always, check with your doctor if you have specific dietary concerns.

Like this product a lot. Large sardines vs King Oscar. Very mild, meaty sardine with light smoke. Very enjoyable as a light, healthy meal with crackers. Highly recommend.
